Your IVF report may say you retrieved 12 eggs, but the number of eggs retrieved is only part of the story. What matters next is how many of those eggs were mature and ready for fertilisation. Eggs can be at different stages of maturity: GV, MI, or MII. MII eggs are fully mature and are generally the ones doctors hope to see. As a general benchmark, around 70–80% of retrieved eggs may be mature. If the maturity rate is lower, it doesn’t automatically mean the eggs are poor quality. Factors like trigger , retrieval , uneven follicle growth, or egg maturation issues can play a role. And even if every retrieved egg is mature, that doesn’t guarantee healthy embryos, because egg maturity is only one part of the IVF journey.
