They might look the same in the functioning, but they treat the issues differently. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, or BHA. This ingredient is oil-soluble and can penetrate the oily residue and dead skin cells that clog the pore space. The American Academy of Dermatology states this acid “helps to unclog the pores and to exfoliate the skin” and “is very useful for the treatment of blackheads and whiteheads”. Niacinamide is essentially a compound form of vitamin B3 and does not penetrate and exfoliate the pores as salicylic acid can.
